Communities & Small-Scale Mining

Communities & Small-Scale Mining

Our initiative focuses on fostering equitable partnerships between Ghana’s mining-affected communities, local leaders, and stakeholders to transform small-scale mining into a driver of sustainable development. Our key focus areas include:

  • Community-Led Advocacy & Storytelling
We amplify local narratives to highlight the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of mining, from land degradation and water pollution to economic empowerment and education access. Through participatory platforms, communities document their experiences, ensuring their perspectives shape policy and practice.

  • Formalizing Small-Scale Mining
Partnering with landowners, chiefs, and authorities, we advocate for regulated frameworks like Ghana’s Community Mining Scheme (CMS), which aims to legalize artisanal mining, create jobs, and reduce illegal galamsey activities. Our work supports transparent licensing, environmental safeguards, and fair resource distribution to align with community needs.

  • Mitigating Socioeconomic & Environmental Harm
Working with partners, we co-create customized interventions that address challenges such as health risks, exploitation, and land loss. We integrate tools like geospatial mapping to monitor mining impacts and guide restoration efforts, ensuring solutions reflect local ecological and cultural contexts and capacity-building programs to reduce dependency on mining. This includes training in sustainable agriculture, financial literacy, and advocacy, empowering communities to balance economic gains with long-term sustainability.

Join Us in redefining mining’s role in Ghana—where communities thrive, ecosystems regenerate, and stories of resilience drive change.
